Scheduling Trees with Communication Delays

Several variants of scheduling task graphs with interprocessor communication delays have been shown to be NP-complete. This paper completely characterizes the complexity of this problem under the restriction that the task graphs are trees and that each task has unit execution time. It is shown that the problem remains NP-complete for binary trees with uniform communication delays. The same hold...

Computational Complexity of the Hamiltonian Cycle Problem in Dense Hypergraphs

We study the computational complexity of deciding the existence of a Hamiltonian Cycle in some dense classes of k-uniform hypergraphs. Those problems turned out to be, along with the hypergraph Perfect Matching problems, exceedingly hard, and there is a renewed algorithmic interest in them. In this paper we design a polynomial time algorithm for the Hamiltonian Cycle problem for k-uniform hyper...

The Edge-Disjoint Paths Problem is NP-Complete for Partial k-Trees

Many combinatorial problems are NP-complete for general graphs, but are not NP-complete for partial k-trees (graphs of treewidth bounded by a constant k) and can be efficiently solved in polynomial time or mostly in linear time for partial k-trees. On the other hand, very few problems are known to be NP-complete for partial k-trees with bounded k. These include the subgraph isomorphism problem ...

Broadcasting and NP - completeness

In this note, we answer two questions arising in broadcasting problems in networks. We rst describe a new family of minimum broadcast graphs. Then we give a proof due to Alon of the NP-completeness of nding disjoint spanning trees of minimum depth, rooted at a given vertex.

Minimizing the overhead for some tree-scheduling problems

This paper is devoted to the study of tree-scheduling problems within the execution model described by Anderson, Beame and Ruzzo. We first prove the NP-completeness of the problem of minimizing the overhead for scheduling trees on m processors, and then we propose an algorithm that provides optimal schedules when complete trees are considered.
